What the instruments say

Relative humidity
How much moisture the air holds compared to the most it could hold at that temperature, shown as a percent.
Hygrometer
A device that reads relative humidity, usually with a temperature reading too.
Pin meter
A moisture meter with two probes pushed into a material to read electrical resistance.
Pinless meter
A meter that reads through a surface without puncturing it, with a limited depth.
Reference reading
A measurement from a spot known to be dry, used for comparison.

Taking readings the same way each time

Consistency makes the numbers meaningful.

  1. Let the hygrometer settle

Place it in the room for at least thirty minutes before reading, away from vents and windows.

  2. Note the time and weather

Record the date, outdoor conditions and whether the heating or cooling is running.

  3. Choose measuring spots

Pick the suspected wall, the floor beside it and a reference spot on an interior wall.

  4. Measure at the same height

Take readings at low, middle and high positions on a wall and write each one down.

  5. Repeat after weather

Take the same readings after rain or a humid day to compare.

Interpreting what you get

A single number is not a diagnosis. Meters read differently on different materials, so a drywall setting will not mean much on wood or concrete. The useful part is comparison: a wall that reads clearly higher than a reference wall, or a spot that rises after rain, points to moisture.

Air humidity matters too. Many people aim for a moderate range indoors, but the point is to see how humidity changes through the week and whether it climbs when it rains or when the dryer runs. If the air reading is high and the wall reading is not, the source may be air moisture rather than liquid water.

Write the readings next to the smell notes. When the two move together, you have found the pattern.

Calibrate habits as well as devices. Take readings in the same places at the same times.

Common questions

Do I need an expensive meter?

A basic hygrometer and meter are enough for comparison. Accuracy matters less than consistent technique.
