Run these on a quiet day

Do them in order and write the result beside each.

What the results suggest

  • IfThe smell weakens after refilling drainsThenA dry trap was involved, so add a routine.
  • IfThe smell worsens when the fan runsThenThe air system is moving it, so look at returns and ducts.
  • IfThe smell strengthens in a closed roomThenSomething inside the room is the source.
  • IfThe smell drops after a dehumidifier runsThenMoisture is involved, and the next step is to find where it enters.
  • IfThe smell follows stored itemsThenRemove soft goods and recheck the room.

Writing it down

Keep one line per test with the date, the conditions and a score from zero to four. A page of short notes will do more than any general theory, and if a professional visits later, the notes save time. Avoid changing more than one thing a day, or the results will blur.

If every test gives the same result, the source may be in the structure itself, in a wall or under a slab, and it is time to ask for specialist help. That is a useful finding as well, because it rules out the easy causes.

Safety comes first. Do not enter a small closed space that smells strongly of gas, and if a gas smell is possible, leave and contact the utility.

Repeat the best tests after any fix. A test that gave a clear answer before is the best way to confirm a change.

Common questions

What if tests disagree?

Disagreement usually means more than one source. Handle the strongest finding first and retest.

How long should each test run?

Long enough for the condition to settle, often fifteen minutes to an hour, or days for dehumidifier tests.
